Document Summary
Sum of socially transmitted things practices, languages, symbols, beliefs, etc. Capacity to create complex life: norms and values, folkways, mores, taboos. Folkways are social preferences, walking down the street shirtless; challenges appropriate behaviour, not illegal. Mores are social requirements, deeply held core norms that are believed to be essential for society, child abuse, murder, cheating; can have punishment. Taboos are strongly held social norms that have severe punishment when broken, incest, cannibalism; norm and sanction is not a consensus. Material culture, tools and techniques; human capacity to make/use tools to do something. Low culture is danger to society since it shows a very unrealistic view of society; working class. High culture are things that uplift people"s" intellect; high/middle class, costly and require cultural capital. Judging other cultures by your own; makes them seem inferior. Critics: immigration and multicultural policies weaken social fabric, weakens commonness.
