Document Summary
Outline: deviance, deviance and social order, deviance > crime, crime, predictors, trends, outcomes, punishment. And in fact, we often find that crime is more hidden than deviance. Deviance and social order: deviance tells us a great deal about social order. Social order/social structure: the level of deviance we observe is an indicator of social order/social structure. Types of deviant behaviour: appearance deviance, mental illness, sexual deviance, violations of the sexual double standard, sexual infidelity, violations of heteronormativity. Informal behaviour of deviance: picking your nose. It may also help legitimatize behaviours, making them no longer unlawful. (e. g. , abortion) Deviance > crime: we cannot underestimate the power of interest groups (i. e. , moral entrepreneurs) in shifting emphasis from one social issue to another (and as a result, to shaping criminal law). In fact, interest groups are responsible for some of the strange laws we"ve had on the books throughout the course of canadian history.
