Document Summary
Norms are rules/expectations of behaviour within particular societies or social contexts. Changes from country to country, culture to culture, society to society, even subculture/society to subculture/society. Without norms we can"t have deviance and vice versa. Littering: something deviant that is not illegal. Snitching on a friend (snitches get stitches) J walking: something illegal that is not deviant. Speeding (10-15km over: something that is both illegal and deviant. Early/primary socialization process: shouldn"t do something because it is frowned upon, how we internalize these norms, eg. , gender roles/norms (girls do this, and boys do that) Norms and the role they play in our everyday lives. The norms of society keep everything functioning. Social control is meant to serve a purpose/group. Laws put in place to control and govern society. Institutions can have formal guidelines (you will not go to jail but will face consequences) Norms created by society to dictate/control how people function.
