We are looking at things we are already familiar with but we want to look at it in a rigorous way. We need to step back and make the familiar strange. We have to become aware of the taken-for-granted, common-sense assumptions that generally frame our vision of the world. Effective theoretical work therefore requires a particular kind of critical thinking. We want to bring the perspective of the outside.
