Everyone must be offered the opportunity to think critically. For sociologist we are looking for topics in which everyday we come in contact with. We are looking at things we are already familiar with but we want to look at it in a rigorous way. We need to step back and make the familiar strange. We have to become aware of the taken-for-granted, common-sense assumptions that generally frame our vision of the world. Effective theoretical work therefore requires a particular kind of critical thinking. We want to bring the perspective of the outside. Manheim: gaining insights through increased social distance is distantiation. Political revolutions, environmental catastrophes, technology key birth of science. World is no longer taken for granted.
