Document Summary

Important elements to ethnicity (from a social constructionist group) So african canadians sort of fall into this category. They have a perceived common ancestry to africa. The perception of a shared history of some sort. They do feel a shared history of racism, being marginalized, being inferior, slavery, segregation, and so on. So having that shared history despite being from different parts of africa. Shared symbols of peoplehood (kinship patterns, cultural practices, geographical concentration, religious affiliation, language) So a language of lingo has developed, there is different music (jazz, rap, etc). Self consciousness (ethnic groups see themselves as distinct but the source may come from others) This is key to ethnicity and really distinguishes it from race. They do have a consciousness of being part of that group, and even though it started as a racial category, they have claimed it. So these reasons articulate as to why they fall into ethnic group.
