Document Summary

Social process theories: differential association and social control. First outlined by sutherland at the university of chicago. Refined it over a number of years. Influenced by ecological approach and shawn mckay (once high rates of delinquency established in neighborhoods, they tended to stay there, didn"t matter who left and who moved in) Sutherland suggested groups can have a pro social or anti-social influences on others and can pass these onto the next generation. Groups with cultural traditions have higher traditions. Cultural transmission: degree to which the culture itself is promoting non-conformity, extent to which its passed on from generation to generation. Arguing against people who sought biological and psychological reasons for crime: any theory should be universalistic. Sutherland"s theory of differential association: criminal behavior is learned. Sutherland did not believe that criminals were innately different: criminal behavior is learned in interaction with other persons in a process of communication. Words include the symbolic meanings of words and attitudes.
