Document Summary

Social reaction to crime + deviance --> durkheim. Deviance + the reactions to it = functional. People became very critical of social + governmental institutions. Origins from symbolic interactionism: people act toward human/non-human objects in their lives according the meaning they have in their lives, meaning derived from interactions w/ people. Individuals can modify meaning depending on the social situation (fluid) Assume human nature is subject to change: having an impact on the enviro/the enviro has an impact of the individual, however, more focused on enviro impact, delinquents = relatively normal people. Deviant behaviour = behaviour people label: frank tannenbaum, crime & community (1938) Primary deviance --> undetected deviance (not going to be labelled) Secondary deviance --> evolved out of the adaptations people made to the problems created by primary deviance. Have to deal w/ stigma associated w/ being labelled an offender Result of long process of primary deviance & penalties(circling in & out of criminal justice system.
