Outline: statuses and roles, three frameworks of gender, socialization of gender, doing gender, origin of gender roles. Slides will be posted on blackboard- this will be a concept and vocab heavy class. Statuses and roles: status(es)- is/are positions in a social hierarchy (ranking) that come with a set of expectations (these are learned expectations behaviour, dress, values etc ex: gender norms are expectations). Ex: paying attention to length of hair, clothers, faicial hair (or lack of), mannerisms ( how you carry yourself), voice pitch. Characterized by social criteria- context specific and socially constructed- (cid:862)doi(cid:374)g ge(cid:374)der(cid:863) Coltrane- interactional( to create an equal division of labour) institutional( family) *there is no innate gender or sex in life the way gender operates in society is different now it"s (cid:272)ha(cid:374)gea(cid:271)le.
