People with different class have different life chances: the importance of income: People of all incomes have learned to want the same consumer products. From birth onward, children learn to want advertised expensive brand of foods, clothing and so on. From childhood onward, people use consumer products to signal their class position, or to obscure it. The gap between wishes and possibilities poses problems for poorer people. The problems create family conflict, peer conflict and low self-esteem (stemming from the inability to purchase desired products).
