The self: a sense of individual identity that allows us to understand who we are in relation to others and to differentiate ourselves from them. Formation of a sense of self begins in childhood and continues in adolescence. Crystallization of self-identity during adolescence is just one episode in lifelong process of socialization. Sigmund freud: infants demand immediate gratification but begin to form a self image when their demands are denied. Charles horton cooley: introduced he idea of looking glass self- others are a reflection of ourselves. Further the first image of the self we receive is from significant others.
