Marx: social class emerges from individual"s relationship to economy: struggle and conflicting interests. Weber: it"s not just about the economy- also political and social power: social class and social status matter, bureaucracy: red tape, rationalization and efficiency, impersonal, systems perpetuate inequality. Solidarity: allows people to act in accordance with their obligations to others and to society. Mechanical solidarity: primitive societies where people are held together by their similarities; each unit is basically self-sustaining and produces for themselves. Organic solidarity: growing population densities require inter-dependence of people who are very different. Guided by distinct norms and values and overall decline in religion weakening of collective conscience. Dol: engaged in specialized tasks and activities (no group can survive on their own) Growth in dol will be beneficial to society as long as we recognize responsibility. The state is the central organ of society and can deal with this.
