Lecture 3- Gender Inequality  Social construction is the process that makes sex diff seem large or small, important or unimportant  In societies that have low birth rate, fertility declines and that dramatizes the gender differences  Women do certain things becuz of society and whats society says woman shud be or how they shud act  Max weber defines domination as the probability that certain specific commands(or all commands) will be obeyed by a given group of persons ex of dominance: parent child relationships, employer-employee relationships, teacher student relationship  Why do woman listen to what men telling them to do? Especially if the man isn’t putting a gun to their heads and threatening them?  Domination is a power relationship in the sense that one person is getting more out of it then the other person you obey your teacher your teacher gains the power  Ppl obey bcuz they have an interest in doing so, or at least think they have an interest  Usually there is a belief in the legitimacy of the actions of the dominant individual or group  If we wanna understand domination we ahve to understand that the diff betwn authority and power is that ppl r obeying bcuz there is a legitimate right that the person u r giving power deserves the power  Obedience is not haphazard or brief but sustained and institutionalized  The relations betwn men and woman show attempts(by men) to routinize patterns of dominance and attempts(by women) to subvert dominance eventually gendered marital inequality creates a permanent pattern of dominance and subordination within the home and the larger community  3 types of legitimate domination traditionally authority  “we’ve always this way” my mom did it this way so im gna do it this way rational-legal authority  we are following the rules and they make sense and there legal and right charismatic authority obedience based on emotional attachment obedience because u r inspired to obey, influenced by someone  Alot of traditional routines r marinated by the notion that they are essential and inevitable  Powerful ppl eliminate the need for naked force if they can convince subordinates that they really ought to obey and that a failure to obey them is immoral, sick, or abnormal  In many societies patriarchy has served as a legitimating ideology  Head of household=the principal earner in any household this ideology is a part of a patriarchy society  Micheal Faoucault has argued that ppl are taught that compliance with authority is “normal” and ppl who repeatedly oppose authority are abnormal and sick  Whenever the subordinate group no longer accepts traditional privileges unquestioningly the status order starts to break down.  Cuz of citizenship man r less able to have dominance over women  Ann Oakley- the 1 to consider housework as real work, unpaid work men b4 thought that household wasn’t work, that women just laid down watching sop operas  Housewives were caught in a social and psychological conflict  Research from Ann Oakley: girls saw housework as something they were suppose to do & they hated it  use of tranquilizers and painkillers were common use for women household workers  Oakley: women have to be brainwashed into embracing motherhood bcuz if they didn’t embrace motherhood u would have to pay so much more to do what the mother is doing hiring a mother is expensive  Differentiation and socialization as the sociology of housework suggests domination requires “othering”—making essential, universal distinctions btwn different kinds of ppl in a power relationship  Several patterned or institutionalized processes maintain gender inequality, just as they maintain the Orientalist outlook st  1 there is gendered socialization from the time ppl r born boys and girls r treated differently, whether parents realize it or not nd 2
