We are all descendants of african immigrants. Immigration rate has increased: result: vast cultural and genetic displacement, diaspora: movement, migration, or scattering of people oustide ancestral homeland (jewish migrations old testament) Migration of first nations/asians to north america occurred thousands of years ago. 500 years ago european colonists came to north america from france, spain: europeans needed manpower for labour in north america, many africans imported as slaves in 17-19th centuries. Late 20th century many asians and free africans immigration. Result: immigrant communities became ethnic, racial diversity in new lands": immigrants form new ethnic communities, hortizontal vs. vertial inequalities that arise between ethnic communities. Despite many similarities, people continue to celebrate superficial differences. Racial and ethnic identities were resistant to change. Marx expected class identities to replace ethnic identities, especially in the minds of class- conscious workers. Survival of ethnicity would have also surprised emile durkheim and max weber. Widespread practice of identifying different kinds" of people.
