SOC356Y1 Lecture Notes - Lecture 2: Jacob Bigelow, Place To Place, Pedro Brieger
Document Summary
These articles speak to an impact that icts are having on social organization and social relations. These are specifically focused within the idea of social ties, and therefore the concept of the networked individual. Some of the other readings provide contrary ideas (often older ones) that illustrate some of the mistakes wellman outlines regarding how we understand icts. These include conceptualizing the world in a way that is stuck in previous ways of thinking about social orgnizations (like putnam and civic associations). The point is to identify the kinds of details provided in how these ideas differ. Social network sets of social units, connections between units, networks as social structure. Ties not everyone unit has a tie with other units in a social network. Networked individualism the ways in which people connect, communicate and exchange information. More freedom but more efforts to maintain relationships.
