They are sold as exchange slaves over the world: lynching was not an aberration it was not an act of exception or mistake that happened. It was something that people hid (an urban legend). These lynching were advertised days in advance, there were posters posted around town to encourage white people to come: the word picnic included white men, women, children watching lynching, lynching was the law itself. You are not punished for lynching black people: lynching was a primary disciplinary tool for keeping black bodies in place. After emancipation, black men were free and able to gain citizenship. There was a huge outcry due to fear of black men gaining citizenship.
