SMC103 Lecture: Wednesday, March 13, 2013 The Christian Family as a Domestic Church Ideas of the domestic church through history (Ch. 6 and 8) Christian family = domestic church  Family is the smallest unit of the Church (Christian community)  Family is ressourcement – roots in early Christian tradition Family as Domestic Church (NT and Patristic Sources) 1. Household Churches (Romans 16:3) a. Ephesians: Paul writing to people, calling people as churches b. Early Christian families had Christian households = Way of tradition, hosting church within household 2. Analogies to Christ and the Church (Ephesians 5:25 – 33) a. Christ relationship to Church = Husband and wife b. Family reflects Christ th th 3. Families as Minisculae Ecclesiae - John Chrysostom (4 /5 CE) a. Every family is a little church th th 4. Christian Parents as Bishops in their Families – Augustine of Hippo (4 /5 CE) a. Just like how Bishops are in charge of each dioceses than parents are in charge of their children Note: In Vat. ll they read a lot like Augustine of Hippo in the Patristic way of writing Vatican ll and the Post-Conciliar Church 1. Second Vat. Council, Lumen Gentium #11 – on the priesthood of all Christians a. Ch. 2: all Christians are all priest/prophet/kings b.
