The thing that goes between whoever is sending the message and whoever is receiving it. Can be anything that sends a message. I. e. intentionally sending out a message you want someone to receive. I. e. hearing the sound of a woodpecker on a tree woodpecker not trying to communicate with you. By putting your voice out there, you are sending part of yourself out to other people. We become influenced by whatever our communication connects to. We are influenced by how messages are sent. Metaphoric device for attaching a specific meaning to a specific sound. Form of metaphoric communication where sounds represent things, objects, places, people, etc. Metaphor means that it is not actually the thing itself, the word is representing something else. Humans started using vocab about 2. 5 million years ago. The order in which we put the words. Depending how that culture organized their words, it could mean different things.
