Agrees with marx - basis of society. Differs with marx - variation of capital (symbolic capital); power comes from many different things. Assigned authority - power granted by institutions. Habitus = day to day beliefs = based on underlying assumptions of order of the world/doxa. When someone uses symbolic capital to get advantage/impose assumptions -> in a field - symbolic violence. Fight symbolic violence with reflexivity: understand what"s happening to us by knowing our positions. Constantly being bombarded with habitus - need transcendental truth. Need something to force reflexivity to be useful with transcendental truth: usually based on science/evidence. Flaws: no evidence of existence of transcendental truth -> no basis for understanding the truth of anything; relativity: can"t assume his theories are accurate - his theories = subject to what the flaws he points to. Media = completely controlled by those with symbolic capital. Mass media - so widespread -> especially effective in creating symbolic violence.
