Document Summary
Often books have more gatherings than there are letters in the 23-letter latin alphabet (no j, u, w) A-z4 aa-zz4 aaa-zzz4 can be conflated to: a-3z4. In some books, not all the gatherings are signed. When unsigned signatures can be inferred, they are labelled but set in italics to show that they are inferences. We can infer the signature of a missed gathering based on the other gatherings in the book. Most irregularities happen at the beginning and the end of a book (gatherings of a funny length at the end of a book) Unsigned preliminary gatherings are indicated with a pi symbol. If the first gathering of a book is unsigned, you cannot infer that the gathering is signed as a small letter. Sometimes you can infer the signature of the first gathering if the second gathering is b or b Other unsigned gatherings are indicated with a chi symbol.
