Due to uncertainty and random variation among population. Without uncertainty and variation, there would be no need for statistics. I. e. gpa grades among students, water level of lake ontario varies over years. Data: systematically recorded information with numbers or labels with its contexts. I. e. can be recorded as numbers, names, labels etc. Data make sense with its context; i. e. 1. 7 can mean anything. Context: who we measure (target audience), what we measure (survey responses, blood pressure, gender) Individuals (cases): objects described by a set of data i. e. people, animals, plants. Variables: characteristic or attribute of individuals that can be measured and taken different values. Quantitate/numerical values are numbers representing counts or measurements. Discrete: takes values that are limited to either a finite amount of a countable number, i. e. people waiting in line. Continuous: variable that is not restricted to separate values but can occupy any value over a continuous range, i. e. income, height, weight.
