Classical poems = poems written in the beginning of zhou dynasty: collected from this long period of time 2500-3000 years ago, not sure exactly when each poem was composed. Poems were from the central regions hunan, shendong, shanshi. Poems were performed at ceremonies set to music and sung but now the music is lost. 3 categories of poems (305 poems in total: fung (regional sounds) 160 poems: ya (elegance) cult music. Many come from west zhou period (early part of this dynasty: song (hymns) 3 types of compositional techniques: fu (straight forward account of the event) Recording of what the poet sees and does. What goes on in a farmer"s life in october: use metaphors to compare things. Objects are not very important they remind them of other things. Usually poets begin by describing physical things and them move on to describing their imagination/ideas.
