Early 20th century avant garde: data and surrealism. Avant garde is grounded in the beginning decades of 20th century, in europe. Context of italian facism, machismo, aggressive masculinity, might is right. Feminine as weak, soft, slow, gentle, backward looking. Manifesto was literal: praise for violence and acceleration. Contrarian in nature, gave it a propulsive energy. Avant garde writer and painter mina loy as well known for her embrace of female sexuality and feminist politics. Joined futurist movement in 1913, but conflicted over group"s perception of women. Sees female body as a site of resistance and advocates growth and binding over destruction. Left movement in 1915 due to misogyny and facism encountered. Early 20th century literary, philosophical, artistic movement formed during wwi in zurich, Switzerland in response to the horrors and folly of the war. Dada art is often nonsensical in nature. Interetested in nonsense, absurd, play, often used humor.
