October 2nd environmental justice has many roots and routes. Gilmore: race as a differential exposure to early mortality, designates some lives as being open to exposure for mortality, necropolitics. Environmental racism definitions: robert bullard, any policy, practice or directive that differentially affects of disadvantages (whether intended or unintended) individuals, groups, or communities based on race or color. Important to recognize that it is a lived reality: still built into the world, made real by the institutions / attitudes etc, race is integral to the way people understand themselves / organize their communities. Early 1980s 1990s: looks at race as in people of colour, does not look at race as whiteness, need to critique privilege, whiteness as a racial formation. Racialization: the work of race in categorizing and arranging the world.
