Gender and Violence Lecture February 5, 2013 Continued from last week Diversity? • Black women become the object of rejection in the white male dominant discourse [often portrayed without heads and in animalistic images] • Women of colour, poor women and lesbians are subjected to racism and classism • You see many black women in photos in the wild and in forests and whatnot Subjective Experience • Safety anxiety: if one is able to obtain this ideal image, they draw attention to themselves and the gaze is on them, and that provokes another kind of anxiety which is the safety anxiety • Appearance anxiety • Shame occurs when people feel they fall short of an internalized or cultural ideal- usually youth- thin and whiteness
