Document Summary
The use of cultural periods from 20 000 to 5000 years ago are in no way universal, the start and end dates are very approximate. These terms are not applicable to all regions. In north america, paleoindian and archaic are two widely used frameworks. Generally, refers to the period in which people first arrived and settled, through to the end of the time in which they were hunting large animals (about 9000 years ago) Used to describe the period from about 9000 to 5000 years ago in much, but not at all, of north america, which is characterized by an ongoing foraging adaptation. From about 12 000 to 10 000 years ago, roughly translates as the middle stone age. It correlates with climate change in europe (warming and deglaciation), advances in stone tool technology and changes in diet. From about 10 000 to 5000 years ago, translates as the new stone age. Correlates with a shift to farming in europe.
