He also tends to use paralysis themes to express a message of entrapment: physically, economically, poliically, psychologically. In araby the narrator comes to a stark realizaion about his moivaions. This is an example of a negaive epiphany. Throughout the story, the narrator is very explicit in his descripion of his emoions: this shows the powerful crush of irst love, it highlights the odd contrast between the narrator"s age and depth of expression. It is his body and hormones talking, not his heart. Joyce"s lexicon choice makes the reader work hard to enjoy and understand the prose. Page"s the landlady (sepia toned: characterizes the seing, ampliies the concept of dead space: empty house, blind end, detached, sepia tone: aged efect; makes the scene appear stagnant.
