First group to immigrate was the northern irish. This group that immigrate is half female, which was very rare for this time usually it was mostly the men that came over first. The british thought that these people coming from northern ireland were the perfect fit to be living in canada: spoke english, supported the crown, used british school system. After the potato famine the got the catholic irish. British also want farmers, and the irish were very good at farming. These families were promised 100 acres of farmland if they moved to canada. There started to get a lot of competition over jobs, people would rather higher english speaking people over the french canadians. Lots of divisions, divisions between rich and poor, between ethnicities, between english and french speakers. Most universities started as seminaries, because they were founded by the church. They did have some legal protection in their marriages, and they inherited their husband"s property when they died.
