Lecture 13
Yeasts can be:
1. Symbiotic:
- mutually beneficial
2. Pathogenic
3. Saprophagic
-feed off decaying matter from other plants or organisms
NOTE: highly related organisms (what u learn in yeast in beer and bread has direct implications
to pathogenic yeast)
EX: paper: newly discovering symbiont yeasts:
-illustrates importance of symbiotic yeasts in the environment
Lichens:
-a complex symbiotic relationship between fungal hyphae, algal cells and a third organism
-discovered thru DNA sequencing found a 3rd organisms (yeast, pathogenic properties)
NOTE: they looked at two different phenotypes of lichen but found they had the same genotype
-something else was contributing to the phenotype
Pathogenic Fungi:
Candida albicans:
-athletes foot
-treat with anti fungal
-can hella fuck u up if immunocompromised
-long hyphae form intimately related to pathogenicity
Cryptococcus gatti
-single celled, invades lungs via spores, infection can cross blood-brain barrier causing
cryptococcal meningitis (kills immunocompromised)
-normally found in tropical climates but a 1999 outbreak in victoria bc killed several people
-traced to parksville where it was randomly growing in trees
-spores blew off to propose pod and killed them
Ustilago maydis
-yeast hat invades corn, is saprophytic
-can wipe out a corn crop
-is a mexican delicacy (Hurtolacoche)
Saprotrophic Yeast:
Saccharomyces cerivisiae
-used in all micorreweries, winerys, bread
-budding yeast

Document Summary

Feed off decaying matter from other plants or organisms. Note: highly related organisms (what u learn in yeast in beer and bread has direct implications to pathogenic yeast) Illustrates importance of symbiotic yeasts in the environment. A complex symbiotic relationship between fungal hyphae, algal cells and a third organism. Discovered thru dna sequencing found a 3rd organisms (yeast, pathogenic properties) Note: they looked at two different phenotypes of lichen but found they had the same genotype. Something else was contributing to the phenotype. Can hella fuck u up if immunocompromised. Long hyphae form intimately related to pathogenicity. Single celled, invades lungs via spores, infection can cross blood-brain barrier causing cryptococcal meningitis (kills immunocompromised) Normally found in tropical climates but a 1999 outbreak in victoria bc killed several people. Traced to parksville where it was randomly growing in trees. Spores blew off to propose pod and killed them. Genetically engineer yeast to creat unique avour pro les.
