A person"s emotional state can be discerned from their facial expression. Ekman and friesen had shown photographs of faces to people in asia, south. All were able to identify the same facial expressions. However, expressions weren"t concluded to be universal because of media exposure in these groups. Objective = test a culture that had not been exposed to the media. Hypothesis = group not exposed to media would still be able to identify these expressions. Traveled to new guinea to study the fore people (stone age society without external exposure) Participants were told a short story and then asked to select which of three photos represented the matching expression.
