SOCI 100A Lecture 6: Sociology notes 9:27 & 10:3
Document Summary
Marx believed that the only way to defeat false consciousness and alienation is through class consciousness. Class consciousness arises when one understands the social forces affecting their lives and feel empowered to do something about it. For marx, this was only possible through revolution. There are some similarities between marx"s alienation and durkheim"s anomie. Alienation: people cannot control the forces directing their lives, social institutions are oppressive and independent, loss of commonality between workers, leads to increase in social problems, results from too many rules. Anomie: people lack close ties, organic solidarity fosters a breakdown in the moral society , creates a relativistic ocean where lines between right and wrong are blurred, leads to increase in social problems, results from too few rules. Relativistic ocean: if nothing is wrong, then nothing is truly right. Both: macro-theoretical- explains the entire system rst, the individual second. Micro-theorists looks at the individual then think about theory, inductive.
