Document Summary

Proteins come in different shapes and sizes. Can be from 30 amino acids to the size of titin. Titin is the largest single polypeptide expressed in humans: 34 350 amino acid residues. Some proteins are composed of a single subunit (or polypeptide), while others consist of many. Hemoglobin: 4 subunits, the fact that is has 4 subunits is absolutely critical to its function. Some proteins are multisubunit proteins where every subunit has a different job. Dna polymerase: some subunits adds nucleotides, some are responsible for proofreading. Many proteins consist of more than just polypeptide chains. There are other biomolecules associated with proteins that let them do their jobs. Prosthetic group: a non-amino acid group permanently associated with a protein. They are associated with proteins that solubilize the fats and allow them to be carries around: good and bad cholesterol are different classes of these proteins.
