Lecture 5, 6 on Carl Jung Carl Jung  Father was a pastor; mother was a doctor  Carl felt that mother was two sided  Father would sit with his dead wife  Childhood events o Stone  age 4 o Mannequin o Phallus dream  at age 3, had a horrible dream, doesn’t tell anyone about the dream until he was 65  He was moved by Freud's writings, became Freud's right-hand, analyzing each other's dream  Married to Emma  5 girls and 1 boy  Had an affair with Toni Wolf, Jung made it clear he didn't want to leave either but the three lived happily  Jung ended up going his own way away from Freud; beginning of NeoFreudian  Jung's writing is difficult to understand; Freud's writing is clear and straight to the point  The Arch  the stuff of stuff (ex. what makes water water?) o Parmenides  everything is made of water o Empedocles' elements  branches off to other elements o Anaxagoras  everything contains everything else  Jung says unconscious has two types o Personal  accessible but not comfortable (ex. memories) o Collective  memories shared with people, we all have the same history (Deep memories from our ancestors) Jung reads about mythology that the Sun has a penis that makes the wind (the Sun's  Phallus)  Your experience echoes from way back, from your mother's experience, which was from your grandmother's  Jung  Meaning of the unconscious and the source  Archetypes  ex. mother can give birth and destruction  A shadow  the dark side of you (in Freudian, the id), but suppressing it, it will surface somewhere else thus it needs to express  Anima  female archetype  the miserable side  Self  the centre/core of your personality  Jung thinks it is needed to express the person underneath us/our conscious personality  Thus, we find this combining of males and females characteristics  Animus and anima switch roles as we age  Psyche  a collection of what we are  To Freud, libidinal was sexually driven  To Jung, libidinal was fueled from conflict  1st principles of thermodynamics: o Energy does not go away, it just goes somewhere else o The energy must come from somewhere, probably from spiritual powers o The same amount is expressed o The same amount of energy expressed by conscious comes from the unconscious  2nd principle: o The system has to be balanced, we demand for balance o Whenever we devote too much time on one side, we are going to be imbalanced  3rd Principle: o Everything has a direct opposite (ex. day and night, cold and hot) o Every principle carries with it is negation (from Hegel) Heraclitus' Flux  Everything we see is
