If a fight ensues, one primate will groom the other to calm him or her down. New words are learned through other words. Nativist perspective: we are innately wired to acquire language. Chomsky was an advocate for this perspective. Brain could be thought of as having a language acquisition device (this is only a metaphor) If we are not in a language rich environment, we tend to create our own.
