PSYC 2230 Lecture Notes - Lecture 6: Language Acquisition Device, Grapheme, Phoneme
Document Summary
I can only express what i have words to say . Phonemes: basic unit of sound ( b , t ) Semantics: the specific meaning of a word. Morpheme reference relationship: every word refers to some concept ( cat refers to a specific type of animal ) Syntax: how words are stringed together to make sense. Pragmatics: the ability to effectively convey language. Language as a social tool to achieve goals. Terance deakan (anthropologist/linguist): grooming among primates fosters social cohesion. If a fight ensues, one primate will groom the other to calm him or her down. New words are learned through other words. Nativist perspective: we are innately wired to acquire language. Chomsky was an advocate for this perspective. Brain could be thought of as having a language acquisition device (this is only a metaphor) If we are not in a language rich environment, we tend to create our own.
