A jealous lover striking out in a rage or soccer fans having a brawl in the stands after a game: instrumental aggression: inflict harm in order to obtain something of value. People who kill others to gain money or attention. Behavioural perspective - results in physical and personal injuries, focuses on outcome. Cognitive perspective - intended to harm another individual, focuses on intention. Theories that view aggression as innate share a perspective as they describe something within as being responsi- ble for aggressive tendencies; built-in, not learned. Instinct theory of aggression: people"s innate desire to be aggressive toward others develops because only ag- gressive animals can ensure that they and their offspring will survive.
