Continues to evolve with third-wave therapies (based on mindfulness, etc. ) Although we often describe our feelings as stemming directly from events, cognitions actually intervene in the middle. Idea is that psychological wellness stems from thinking; thus, problems will be caused by illogical thinking. The goal of cognitive therapy is to revise illogical thoughts to lead to more appropriate emotional reactions (fix faulty thinking) Three steps to revise cognitions: identify illogical cognitions (automatic thoughts, challenge these illogical thoughts (can be verbally challenged with logic, or behavioural experiments can be assigned, replace them with more logical cognitions. Cognitive therapy is usually only 15 sessions or less, structures and planned, and focused on particular goals determined by client and therapist at the outset.
