SACR 2620 Lecture 5:
Document Summary
Proactive policing: hot spots patrol, broken windows, problem oriented, community policing. Broken windows model: police need to get involved at first signs of disorder, encourage community involvement, order maintenance activities, social incivilities, loitering, public drinking, physical incivilities, vacant lots, abandoned buildings. Part of the solution is members of the community seeking and willing to improve the community. Problem oriented: neighborhood disorder creates fear, neighborhood give out crime promoting signals, serious criminals move in, police need citizen cooperation. Community policing: a problem, concerns community and citizens, not just police. Is a pattern of events, not a single incident: must be understood through the views of competing interests, requires a long term solution strategy, requires more initiative from patrol officers in order to solve problems. Infrastructure repair- repairing a certain area in the community as community policing. Long term problem will require long time solutions.
