PSYC-1000 Lecture Notes - Lecture 47: Behavioural Genetics, Factor Analysis, Heredity
Document Summary
Trait: an enduring quality that makes a person tend to act a certain way. Trait theory of personalty: we are make up of a unique collection of traits -- cognitive, emotional, and behavioural predispositions that can be identified and measured. Why measure personality: to objectively describe your uniqueness, to facilitate self-understanding -- to discover who you really are, to determine whether personality can predict behaviour. Mmpi test: to measure personality style and emotional adjustment, norms: based on "normal" vs. "mentally ill, 567 statements: agree/disagree, statements include: When bored, l like to stir up excitement. Self-report inventories: psychological tests in which a person"s responses to standard questions are compared to established norms. Dimensions: factor analysis identifies elements that tend to cluster together, suggests that there are two basic dimensions along which we all vary, these variations may be linked to genetics. Researchers use self-report inventories and peer reports to assess and score the big five personality factors.
