Establishment of virginia: 1607 virginia company/jamestown, 1618 headright land system, 1619 house of burgesses, 1622 tobacco. Virginia = queen elizabeth i (the virgin queen) Interested in exploiting resources, rather than set up a society/community. Most men who came over were sons of wealthy, established, elite. 1616: 80% of those who had come in the first year had died. Virginia company decides to put money into farming, looking for a cash crop. Looking for gold and silver, not farming (agriculture slow to develop) Those who could pay their own way from europe would be given 50 acres of land. Wealthy could come over with many servants and pay their way. First elected assembly in what will be known to be the 13 colonies. Has a charter of rights and liberties. The governor had the right to overturn anything the house did. 1619: arrival of the first african-american people (not as slaves yet)
