Anatomy and Cell Biology 2221 Lecture Notes - Lecture 2: Cranial Nerves, Vasomotor Center, Pharyngeal Reflex
Document Summary
Coordinates skeletal muscle action- allows controlled movement. Disturbances in gait, unable to walk a line heel to toe, fall or tilt toward injured side: drunken gait , cerebellum has ipsilateral control: lesion is on same side as deficit. Unable to coordinate muscle for speech- slurred speech. Medulla changes to spinal cord at foramen magnum. Nuclear center- a lot of neurons travelling through. Colliculi (superior and inferior) on the posterior aspect. Cranial nerves: iii (3) and iv (4: have their nuclear centers in the midbrain, pons. Acts as a bridge to other areas neurons going in different directions though the pons. Cranial nerves: v (5), 6 and 7: tumor in pons: see deficit in these cranial nerves, medulla oblonga. Has 2 pyramids in the middle, bumps on either side are the olives. Output of limbic system moves though medulla- partly responsible for anger/aggression. Cardiac center adjusts rate & force of heart beat. Respiratory centers control rate & depth of breathing.
