Document Summary

Floor: formed by muscles of the neck: splenius capitus: attaching onto. Triangles of neck occipital bone: levator scapulae: seen in posterior area of the neck, 3 scalenes: middle, posterior and anterior. External jugular v. lies over top of scm (border) Runs over top of levator scapulae and diving to scm and trapezius. Trunks of brachial plexus r, t, d, c, b coming out between the middle and anterior scalene muscles. Omohyoid (inferior belly)- attached to hyoid bone and scapula. Associated structures: trunks of brachial plexus, subclavian artery. Subclavian vein doesn"t come out of same area- passes just medial to anterior scalene and is not within the scalene triangle. Both artery and vein pass below the clavicle, which can cause complications if the clavicle is fractured. The brachial plexus also passes below the clavicle, and the nerves can become compressed and lead to tingling or numbness in the arm.
