Islets of langerhans - large, pale staining areas scattered throughout the pancreas. Supported by reticular tissue irregular, anastomosing cords and clumps of cells separated by capillaries. Special methods reveal at least 3 cell types: alpha (a) cells beta (b) cells delta (d) cells. Beta cells produce insulin which enables the body to utilize glucose. Alpha cells produce glucagon which offsets the influence of insulin. Delta cells produce somatostatin which inhibits glucagon release and decreases pancreatic exocrine secretion. Endocrine glands are ductless glands of internal secretion. Neurohypophysis - derived from the brain and resembles nervous tissue. Adenohypophysis - derived from oral ectoderm and resembles. Development endocrine tissue the infundibulum evaginates from the floor of the brain. Rathke"s pouch forms from the oral ectoderm the infundibulum forms the infundibular stem, then the infundibular process (pars nervosa) Rathke"s pouch forms the pars distalis, pars intermedia and pars tuberalis. Neurohypophysis: median eminence, infundibular stem, pars nervosa (posterior pituitary)
