Anatomy and Cell Biology 3309 Lecture 2:
Document Summary
Acb 3309 lecture 2 (the structural basis of cell bio) The cell part 1 cell membrane & cytoplasmic organelles. Cell membrane: separates the intracellular environment form the extracellular environment: nucleus. Cytoplasm: organelles: use energy to function &/or produce energy, membranous: a membrane separates internal structure of the organelle from the intracellular environment, note: the nucleus is an organelle, rough er, golgi apparatus. Secretory granules: bud off golgi and carry protein product, up to 1. 5 um (1500nm!) in diameter. For this course, we need to use special stains to id the contents. Inclusions: products of metabolic activity storage for worn out material or material used for energy. Cytosol/cytoplasmic matrix: fluid component in which the organelles and inclusions are found. Selective barrier prevents some things and allows others to get through. 10nm thick can use the lipid bilayer as a ruler: diff cell components have diff sizes, can use this as a size indicator to help you distinguish what they are.
