Anatomy and Cell Biology 3309 Lecture Notes - Lecture 21: Loose Connective Tissue, Bone Marrow, Progenitor Cell
Document Summary
Cells of the immune system & lymph nodes. Cellular immunity = cells providing immunity come in contact w invader to destroy it: t cells do this, targeting transformed cells for destruction. The lymphatic system consists of cells, tissues, and organs that monitor the body for presence of potentially harmful substances and react to them. Progenitor cell that gives rise to t and b cells, originates in the bone marrow. Contain lymphatic nodules (organizations of lymphatic tissue that don"t have a capsule: thymus is specific to t cells. T cells are isolated from immunological agents in the body, so they can undergo differentiation and become antigen-specific w out actually encountering an antigen. Secondary lymphoid organs/tissues where immunocompetent cells wait to be activated: diffuse lymphatic tissue. Lymphocytes: t cells highly abundant esp in blood, helper t, b cells, natural killer cells. Thin ring of cytoplasm, large nucleus w heterochromatin. Lymphatic tissue tends to be aggregations of large #s of small lymphocytes.
