Anatomy and Cell Biology 3309 Lecture Notes - Lecture 3: Cell Membrane, Merocrine, Proteoglycan
Document Summary
Organized accumulation of cells that function in a collective manner (don"t need to be the. 4 basic tissues: 1) epithelial lines outside of the body and inside of hollow organs/cavities, 2) connective provides structural and functional support for other tissues also metabolic support (provide blood/nerve supply to other tissues) Large number of tissues represented: connective tissue proper, blood, bone, cartilage, immune system: 3) muscle contracts to cause movement. 3 types: skeletal, cardiac, smooth: 4) nervous transmits electrical signals which control body functions; communication between tissues of the body. Location: covers surfaces and lines walls of hollow organs and body cavities (eg. stomach, respiratory tract, intestines, skin, etc. ) Functions (epithelia don"t necessarily do all the functions): barrier, secretion, absorption, transport, receptors (some specialized epithelia in nose, not many other receptor epithelia) Avascular no blood vessels, rely on connective tissue to bring nutrients + remove waste through blood vessels in it. Epithelia surround lumens and are anchored to connective tissue.
