Palms forward such that thumbs are pointing away. Planes of reference towards outside towards middle above below forward/ towards front backwards/towards back. Farther from point of attachment same side opposite sides external internal. Sagittal: think of midsagittal ; sagittal = any plane in the same direction (also called parasagittal: divides body into left and right halves. Coronal/frontal: like cutting off frontal lobe: divides body into front and back halves. Transverse/horizontal: salami slice; divides top half from bottom half; like a table. Three layers of the brain: dura mater, arachnoid mater, and pia mater. Functions: cover and protect cns, enclose and protect blood vessels supplying the cns, contain the csf (in subarachnoid space between pia and arachnoid mater) The meninges extend around the spinal cord and down into the cns.
