De duve worked on the regulatory pathways for glucose metabolism. He worked with hugo theorell who also received a nobel prize for the discovery of oxidative enzymes. Nobel prize for discovering the organization of the cell. Before eduard buchner, biochemists thought that cells had a mechanism and a pathway, because they were alive. However, buchner broke apart the cells and showed that exposing that homogenized cells to glucose also results in fermentation in yeast cells. So he showed that the mechanism in a cell is due to the chemistry, not because they are alive. Albert claude developed the centrifugation method to separate the components of the cell, from the homogenized solution of broken cells.
