Lecture 2: cells of the nervous system neuronal properties. Support cells they do many things than just support: equally important than the neurons. Neurons could do their cells without the support cells and vice versa. 3 main components of the neuron: dendrite, cell body, axon. Understanding the anatomy is critical to understanding its function. Incoming signal -> take the signal and decide what to do to it: can be neurotransmitter from adjacent neuron from peripheral environment. Cell body: main function of every cell body of every cell: control the neuron, have all the organelles (mitochondria, ribosomes, etc. ) to maintain the normal metabolic function of the cell. What the dendrites look helps you determine. Multipolar neuron: 99% neurons, motor neurons, interneurons (lie between motor and sensory neurons, only in cns, get receiving information from multiple regions on the dendrite. Can characterize the axon by it"s region: closer to peripheral receptive ending = peripheral process, and the other one is central process.
