Document Summary

Cancer is the leading cause of death in north america; strikes victims of all ages; becoming more prelevant as the population ages. Cancer is characterized by genetic and biochemical defects. Biochemical and molecular biology provide avenues for cures. Prone to metastasis: can spread from their primary (initial) site to one or more secondary sites. Different cancers tend to spread to different organs; common sites are bones, liver, and lungs. Ex. cells grow as benign tumour, break through basal lamina, invade capillary, adhere to the blood vessel wall in the wall of the liver, escape from the blood vessel (extravasation) and then proliferate to form metastasis in lung. Do not respond to signals that normally trigger cell death. Normal cells go through a limited number of divisions and then trigger a signal that leads to its death. G1/s checkpoint - checks for cell size, nutrients, growth factors, and dna damage.
