Document Summary

Topic 10: biological forms of energy and reducing power. Any chemical reaction can, in principle, proceed in one of two directions, in which the reactants are transformed into the products or vice versa. Determines whether a reaction is energetically favorable or unfavorable. The change in which determines whether or not a chemical reaction requires energy to proceed in a particular direction. The forwards and reverse reactions occur to the same extent and no net reaction takes place. The forward reaction is more energetically favorable, or spontaneous. Additional energy is not needed to make the forward reaction proceed. This will continue until equilibrium is reached at which time the concentration of products will be higher than that of reactants. The reverse reaction is more energetically favorable, or spontaneous. Additional energy will be necessary to make the forward reaction proceed. At equilibrium, the concentration of reactants will be greater than that of the products.
