Topic: evolution and ecology: long-term patterns of evolution are shaped by large-scale processes such as speciation, mass extinction and adaptive radiation. An isolated population that breeds amongst itself: reproduction amongst the individuals in the population, evolution is the genetic differentiation in the population. The genetic divergence of populations over time can lead to speciation. Landscape as the driver of speciation (ie. amazon river creating bridges: other drivers (p. 149, hybridization, predator pressure, genetic drift. We anticipate that the group outside of the pinnipeds are the mustelids (weasel family). One group is primarily terrestrial, other is aquatic they have adapted to their environment. Look at fossil record: includes 18 other species of extinct species related to the walrus. We are potentially facing the next big mass extinctions, as we are the drivers of climate change. Over 90% of marine species were driven to extinction. Dinosaurs evolved into birds: birds are extremely modified. Adaptive radiation is represented by bill morphology.
